Have you ever walked past a dirty dumpsite and wished it could just disappear? The stench, the flies, the endless piles of waste — it’s enough to make anyone look away. But not 17-year-old Amara Nwuneli.
Each time she walked by a smelly waste ground in Lagos, she didn’t just see trash — she saw possibility. She imagined laughter instead of odour, colours instead of grey, and joy where there was once decay.
Her Big Idea
Amara looked at the piles of old tyres and rubbish and thought: “What if this could be a place for children to play instead of a place for rats and flies?” She got to work and turned the dumpsite into a playground built with recycled materials — swings, slides, and climbing spaces all made from things people had thrown away.
Global Recognition
Her project didn’t just help kids in her community — it wowed the whole world. In April 2025, Amara won the Earth Prize, an international award for young people creating eco-solutions. Out of a total prize pool of $100,000, Amara received $12,500 — over ₦18.5 million — to expand her idea and create more eco-playgrounds across Nigeria.
Why It Matters
Amara’s project proves that you do not need to wait until you are “grown up” to make a difference. She is tackling pollution, waste, and lack of play spaces — all at once. She is showing that recycling is not just about bottles and cans; it can create joy, health, and hope.
