NELFUND Explained: What Every Nigerian Student Should Know

The Nigeria Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) was created to help students pay for university. But how does it actually work — and how do you apply?

Punch NextGen

You have probably heard the name NELFUND thrown around — maybe your older siblings are talking about it or you saw it trending online. But what exactly is it, and does it affect you? Here is the gist, simply explained.

What Is NELFUND?

NELFUND stands for the Nigeria Education Loan Fund. It was established by the Federal Government in 2024 to provide interest-free loans to Nigerian students in federal universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education.

The idea is simple: many talented Nigerian students cannot afford to pay for university. NELFUND gives them a loan to cover tuition and basic living costs — and they only start repaying once they are employed after graduation.

How Does It Work?

  • Who qualifies? Students in federal tertiary institutions (universities, polytechnics, colleges of education). You must be a Nigerian citizen and be actively enrolled.
  • What does it cover? Tuition fees and upkeep allowance (money for living costs like accommodation and meals).
  • Is it really interest-free? Yes — the loan does not grow over time. You pay back only what you borrowed.
  • When do you repay? After graduation, once you have a job and are earning income.
  • How do you apply? Through the NELFUND online portal — your school verifies your enrolment.

Why It Is a Big Deal

Before NELFUND, if your family could not afford university fees, your options were: find a sponsor, defer enrolment, or drop out. NELFUND changes that equation. It is Nigeria’s first formal, government-backed student loan programme.

What to Watch Out For

  • NELFUND only covers federal institutions — state universities are not currently included.
  • The fund is still being rolled out — not all eligible students have been able to access it yet.
  • Beware of scammers: only apply through the official NELFUND.gov.ng portal. Do not pay anyone to help you apply.

NELFUND is not perfect — but it is a start. For the first time, access to higher education in Nigeria is not tied solely to what your parents can afford. That is a big step forward.
