Floods in Nigeria: What’s Really Going On?

Floods are devastating communities across Nigeria. Here is what is causing them, what states are doing, and what you can do to help.

Punch NextGen

Across Nigeria, floods are sweeping through communities, destroying homes, and displacing thousands. But what is really happening — and why does it keep getting worse every year?

What Is Causing the Floods?

  • Climate change — rainfall patterns are becoming more intense and unpredictable.
  • Poor urban drainage — many Nigerian cities have blocked or badly designed drainage systems that cannot handle heavy rain.
  • Building on flood plains — people build homes in areas that rivers naturally use when they overflow.
  • Deforestation — trees slow down rainwater; without them, water rushes directly into rivers and streets.
  • Upstream dam releases — when the Lagdo Dam in Cameroon releases water, it flows into the River Benue and floods communities downstream in Nigeria.

What States Are Doing

Several states have activated emergency response plans, relocated displaced families to temporary shelters, and begun clearing drainage channels. The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) regularly issues flood advisories and coordinates relief efforts.

What YOU Can Do

  • Do not dump rubbish in drains or waterways — blocked drains make flooding worse.
  • Plant trees wherever possible — they absorb water and reduce runoff.
  • Stay informed — check NEMA alerts and evacuate early if you live in a flood-prone area.
  • Volunteer with relief organisations to help affected families.

Floods are a serious problem — but they are not inevitable. Better infrastructure, smarter urban planning, and community action can reduce the damage dramatically. Your generation will be the one to redesign Nigerian cities for a wetter future.
